Tools for Sustainablity
It may be complicated to understand if your university is sustainable and what steps might be taken to ensure it. Therefore, some online tools and metrics might help:
1. The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) https://stars.aashe.org/
Created by The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (https://www.aashe.org/), it is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance, a global sustainability standard created by and for higher education. It evaluates various engagements into sustainable activities (courses offered, staff teaching sustainability, research, student and public involvement in initiatives, etc.), material operations (water, energy use, food, waste, etc.), social equity, planning, and innovation for sustainable development.
2. UI Green Metric World University Ranking https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/
It is a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia. It determines universities’ environmental commitment and initiatives using 6 criteria encompassing 39 indicators. It includes setting and infrastructure, energy, waste, water, transportation, education and research.
3. The Princeton Review Green Colleges ranking https://www.princetonreview.com/college-rankings?rankings=green-colleges
This rating comprehensively measures a school's performance as an environmentally aware and prepared institution. Via surveys of school administration and students, it evaluates whether students have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and sustainable, how well a school is preparing students for employment in the clean-energy economy of the 21st century as well as for citizenship in a world now defined by environmental concerns and opportunities; and how environmentally responsible a school's policies are.
4. The Green Office Model https://www.greenofficemovement.org/
It is an online tool and a free course that involves students, staff and academics working to advance sustainability in and beyond higher education. It was created and developed by rootAbility and the UNESCO Chair of Higher Education for Sustainable Development at Leuphana University Lüneburg. On this website, you can learn how to establish a Green Office, discover Green Office case studies, and get ideas for making your university sustainable by mapping, designing, pitching and lobbying ideas for improvement.
These tools and metrics provide a comprehensive overview of sustainability initiatives in higher education institutions, allowing for benchmarking, comparison, and identification of best practices.
